The Volunteer Services Department uses volunteerism as a strategy to address unmet community needs.
Several programs combine to offer comprehensive services to potential volunteers and
to agencies seeking volunteer assistance.

in Manchester

DRIVERS NEEDED:
The Care Givers to join a caring team and provide transportation to elderly clients to and from medical appointments in the Manchester area.  Approximate volunteer time would be 2 hours per week.

Child Health Services to provide transportation to appointments, dental clinics, etc. for clients.

American Cancer Society to transport clients from home to their treatment and back.  Treatments can last anywhere from 15 min. to 3 hours.  Treatments are in Manchester, Hooksett, Derry, Lebanon, and Boston.  Drivers can pick the areas they want to drive to.  Drivers use their own vehicles.  Driver check will be done and there is a one hour orientation session. 

Veterans Administration Hospital to pick up veterans for appointments.  VA van is used.  AARP Safe Driver class, physical exam, background check, and finger printing required. 

St. Joseph Community Services to pick up and deliver Meals on Wheels packets.  Own vehicle required.  Background and driver checks done.  15-20 meals per day delivered.  Approximate volunteer time per day is 2 hours or less.


READERS AND TUTORS NEEDED:
Families in Transition ~ needs help with GED tutoring, help in the Children’s Literacy & Arts Program (1 hr/wk x 6 wk commitment).

Head Start Program ~ looking for volunteers to read to children from 3-6 years old in their classrooms (once a week, bi-weekly, monthly) - flexible days and times.

Learn to Read (Adults) Independent ~ one-on-one pairing to teach an adult to read.  Part of ProLiteracy America Programs.  Orientation and 16 hour training required (2 Sat in a row, 8:30-4:30) off site in Bedford.  6 mo to 1 yr commitment required.  Tutoring done at Manchester City Library and also West Side Community Library.

Peabody Mill Environmental Center ~ teachers wanted for environmental/science programs.

St Anselm College ESL Program ~ tutors needed for the English for New Americans program.  Summer program available as well as during the school year. 


HELP NEEDED SORTING FOOD AND STOCKING SHELVES:
New Horizons, NH Food Bank, SNHS Commodity Food Distribution, WIC, St Joseph’s Community Services.


MEAL SERVING AND DISTRIBUTION:
New Horizons ~ the New Horizon’s Soup Kitchen needs volunteers to help prepare and serve the 200+ meals that are served daily.

Kids Café (Salvation Army) ~volunteers are needed to serve warm evening meals to children four nights a week.

Girls, Inc. ~  food prep and serving for breakfast and dinner program. 


GREETER:
Front desk greeter needed at Amoskeag Fishways to help visitors have a good walk-in experience.  Volunteer would also help with phones and take registrations.  Flexible times, 2-10 hrs/wk. 

Manchester Artists Association ~ meet & greet public.  Occasional sales.  Open & close gallery.  W, Th, F, S 10-4

Franco-American Centre ~ answer phones, greet and help visitors to the cultural center to make people aware of the contributions of the Franco-Americans.

Peabody Mill Environmental Center ~ greet visitors, register them for courses/events, and answer questions.  Help needed on weekends. 

SEE Science Center ~ greet visitors, man cash register, answer questions.


HOSPICE SUPPORT:
Local hospice agencies are looking for caring individuals to provide companionship to their nursing home patients. This is a rewarding one-on-one experience and only 1 – 2 hours per week is required.  Training provided.  Hospice agencies include Allegiance Hospice, Beacon Hospice and Palliative Care, Amedysis Hospice, and Visiting Nurses Association.


SPECIAL EVENTS VOLUNTEER:
Several of our agencies periodically request extra hands for special events.  Sometimes it is to help with mailings, stuff name tags, greet people at an event, help with set-up and registration, etc.

Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. ~ needs phone, commissary, and greeters for their telethon on 8/31 and 9/1. 


RECEPTIONIST:
Families in Transition ~ needs a receptionist to answer a multi-line phone system and handle customer service calls for the thrift store.  Hours would be 12-5 and days available are Monday through Thursday.  Training will be provided.

Granite State Ambassadors ~ their training consists of 14 hours of training through 7 modules.  Specialized training as well.  To keep GSA status, must continue to be an active ambassador. 

Manchester Community Music School ~ light reception, phone duties and small projects.
Not for the hard of hearing.  Lively place, often noisy.  Time frames are 9-3 T-F and 12-5 M thru the school year.  Summer camps. 


FRIENDLY VISITOR:
Nursing homes need friendly visitors for 1-on-1 in rooms or at activities. 
Flexible days and hours.  (Contact the RSVP office for a list of local nursing homes). 

Seniors Count/Neighbors Care ~ one-on-one friendly visits to frail, isolated seniors.


HELP WITH BINGO AND GAMES:
Many nursing homes need help with Bingo and other games.  Often it is to help the resident mark their Bingo card, etc., as they often don’t have the dexterity to do that themselves.  Flexible days and hours.  (Contact the RSVP office for a list of local nursing homes).


CHILD ADVOCATE:
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) ~ needs volunteers to work with social workers, attorneys, and families to be advocates in court for abused/neglected children. Great flexibility in schedule required.  Fair amount of driving involved (to & from visits with children, court, etc.).  Thorough screening of volunteer done, 40 hour pre-service training, long-term commitment (typically 24 months per case). 


DOCENTS NEEDED:
Currier Museum of Art ~ needs docents (15-20).  Must become Guild Member (? Yearly fee).  10 week training program.

Zimmerman House ~ will need docents for evenings and weekends. 


MUSEUM SUPPORT:
Currier Museum of Art ~ needs visitor services help in taking tickets, guiding traffic flow, answering general questions.  They also need assistance for the Family programs in keeping kids in the classrooms.


JOB SEARCH HELP:
Families in Transition ~ need help in their Employment & Training Program with job search, resume writing, conducting mock interviews. 


THE ELLIOT HOSPITAL:
Hospital has a wide variety of needs.  Volunteer services include mail room, crafts, clerical, information desk, gift shop, lunch cart, patient support, patient transport, departments such as radiology, urology, on call services, etc.


CLERICAL:
CASA ~ needs an office volunteer to answer phones and process mail 2-3 hours daily.

Manchester Health Department ~ filing & general Office 6 hrs/wk.  Some standing & typing.

CHILDREN’S AIDES:
Girls, Inc.~ after school program needs assistance with activities, crafts, and enrichment program. 


INFORMATION BOOTH:

Manchester City Hall Info Booth ~ approximately 12 hours/wk.  Must know where each dept is located in order to direct public to offices.  Clear, police voice required.

NURSING HOMES:
Nursing homes have a need for friendly visitors, help with crafts and games, taking residents outside in good weather, assisting the staff in taking residents in a van for field trips.  (Contact the RSVP office for a listing of local nursing homes).


CRAFTS:
Girls, Inc. ~ after school program needs assistance with activities and crafts.

Nursing Homes.  Many of our nursing homes have a need for craft help.  Craft skills are not required; just willingness and patience to help the residents.  (Contact the RSVP office for a listing of local nursing homes). 


THRESHOLDS AND DECISIONS:
Hillsborough County Dept of Corrections ~ 12 week critical thinking and decision making program for soon-to-be-released inmates.  5 hour training required.


OUTREACH AND SUPPORT:
Massabesic Audubon Center (Auburn) ~ provide environmental education.  Demonstrate sustainable land and resource use. 

Salvation Army ~ seasonal assistance with bell ringing.   Serving immediate crisis needs. Serving developing needs at youth center.


INCOME TAX PREPARATION HELP:
AARP is in need of tax aides from Jan. to April 15, 2009 for approximately 4 hours per week, any day other than Sunday.


USHER:
Palace Theater ~ ushers needed.  One time orientation required.  Initially paired up with veteran usher.  Commitment of 3 performances in a three to four month period.  Dress requirement:  black & white.

The Majestic Theatre ~ ushers needed.  Dress requirement:  No jeans.


BUSINESS COUNSELOR:
SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) ~ needs help with counseling for new business start up.


MEDICARE COUNSELING:
Service Link ~ is in need of SHIP (State Health Ins Assistance Program) counselors for one-on-one counseling and community outreach for people on Medicare who are interested in Medigap, Medicare Savings Plan, and Medicare Part D.  3 day training required.


MAINTENANCE/HOME REPAIRS:
The FixIt Program ~volunteers needed to do minor home repairs including carpentry, plumbing, and general handyman jobs.

UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center ~ help with rebuilding fences, painting, yard work, etc.


BARN HELP:
UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center ~ needs help with daily care of horses (feeding, turning out, cleaning stalls, grooming).


RIDER ASSISTANCE:
UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center ~ participate in riding session by assisting rider with grooming and tacking prior and walking/jogging beside the rider to insure safety. 


MUSICAL:
Headstart ~ someone to play an instrument and sing with the children (3-5 year olds) for a 30 minute time frame.  Once a week, every other week, or once a month.  Days and times flexible. 

Nursing Homes ~ several nursing homes are in need of singers or piano players to entertain the residents.  (Contact the RSVP office for a list of local nursing homes).


CRISIS LINE ADVOCATE:
YWCA Crisis Service ~ volunteer for the 24-hour crisis line.  38 hour volunteer training required, plus attend four volunteer support group meetings per year and commit to one year of volunteer service.  Must be open-minded, non-judgmental, able to work with diverse populations, and possess sensitivity and understanding to the issues of domestic violence, sexual violence, and stalking.


ANIMAL HELP:
Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter needs help with cage cleaning, laundry, and kitchen help.  Volunteer needed to go to the Pet Smart store to give out information about the shelter and answer questions on Adoption Days. 


CAGE HELP:
Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter needs help with cage cleaning.


KNITTERS:
Knitters are needed to make hats, mittens, scarves, sweaters, afghans, and chemo hats which will be given to the needy at schools, soup kitchens, shelters, hospitals, and nursing homes. 
Stay in the comfort of your own home and knit.  Drop the finished products off at our office or we will gladly pick them up from you.  We usually have a supply of yarn to give out as well. 


TEACH KNITTING AND/OR CROCHETING:
Girls, Inc. ~ would like someone to teach knitting and/or crocheting to 11+ year old girls.
